The Greenham Beef Sustainability Standard (GBSS) uses a tiered system to recognise and support continuous improvement in sustainable beef production. Your tier is determined based on your on-farm practices, management systems, and evidence of outcomes.
Tier 1: Sustainability Awareness
-
Establishes a baseline for sustainability.
-
Focuses on education and awareness of sustainable practices.
-
Designed to help producers understand and begin engaging with sustainability metrics.
Tier 2: Planning and Monitoring
-
Requires producers to set clear goals and strategies for improving sustainability.
-
Involves evidence-based monitoring of key areas such as resource use, animal welfare, and environmental impact.
-
Eligibility for price premiums begins at this level.
Tier 3: Outcomes and Resilience
-
Recognises producers who demonstrate high-level outcomes in sustainability.
-
Emphasises measurable improvements in ecological health, business resilience, and community contribution.
-
Reflects the most advanced level of sustainability performance under the GBSS.
Note: There is no requirement to move between tiers, and producers can remain at the tier that best suits their current operation. However, additional market premiums are only available to those approved at Tier 2 or Tier 3.
