Urea emissions and how to reduce them

A quick summary of why urea represents part of my emissions and how I can address it.

  1. Where do urea emissions come from?
Urea releases nitrous oxide (N₂O) during soil microbial processes, particularly when conditions favour volatilisation and denitrification.
  2. How can I reduce my urea emissions?
    • Use urease inhibitors to slow nitrogen conversion and reduce emissions.
    • Apply urea during cool, moist conditions to reduce volatilisation.
    • Rotate with legume crops to enhance natural nitrogen fixation.
